#10 IRRATIONAL BELIEFS

Rational vs Irrational thoughts:

The following beliefs that many of us subscribe to can all be refuted by rational thought.  Each person will come up with their own argument against these IB’s and then share with the group.  We will discuss the entire exercise in a large group.  Some people never get this at all but here you are, still in high school, being exposed to ideas that many people spend years and thousands of dollars working through with their shrink.  Enjoy this gift!

It is absolutely necessary to have the love and approval of friends / family and peers

  1. You must be competent and almost perfect in everything you do.

  2. Certain people are evil, wicked and villainous and should be punished.

  3. It is horrible when people and things are not the way you would like them to be.

  4. External events cause most human misery, people simply react as events trigger their emotions.

  5. You should feel fear or anxiety about anything that is unknown, uncertain or potentially dangerous.

  6. It is easier to avoid life’s difficulties and responsibilities than to face them.

  7. You need something stronger than yourself to rely on.

  8. The past has everything to do with determining the present.

  9. Happiness can be achieved by kicking back and endless leisure.
